Have You Ever......

Have you ever picked a ripe apple from the tree, "shined it up" and taken a big ole bite right there in the orchard? That's what Becky and I did today. And as you can see, the weather was perfect for the picking.
The orchards are just now opening up and the trees are ripe for the picking. Literally, you could pick a peck of apples from one limb without taking a step. And even at that you would only be picking 10% of the fruit on that single limb. Absolutely studded with apples. It's hard to imagine how the trees could be strong enough to support all those apples!
We took a 1 hour ride up and to the West of Agusta, the states capital, to Lakeside Orchards. You could pick your own from three different types of apples... Macs, Cortlands and Sarah Reds. The Reds and Cortlands are snappy, juicy, and have just a bit of a tart taste. The skins are pure red and the meat is as white as an angels wings. Being a salt-aholic, I enjoy salt on apples. So after taking the first bite, I put my salt shaker to work and ate four Corlands and two Reds before leaving the orchard. Becky will be making a few pies (need I say APPLE) tomorrow and our neighbors will benefit from our "labors" today.
Maine.... what a state!

  1. Those apples look "delicious", pun intended. After reading your blog, I can hardly wait to get to Maine. We're going to have to research what months we need to be in which state. I'm making a note for August & September being good months for Maine. Don't eat all the lobsters before you leave! Maybe I should keep my special PA Dutch Apple Pie plate that's in the garage sale too. Have fun!

  2. August and September are GREAT months to be in Maine although September is a little on the cool side for some folks. We LOVE it!

No problem on the lobsters. In early August you will still be getting "shedders" (soft shell) lobsters. They are fantastic - a little less meat than when their shells harden, but the meat is sweeter, more tender, and the meat in the claws is surrounded in the most delicious "juice" you can imagine. Apples in September for sure - keep the plate! Good luck to you two....

  3. Sure looks great there Mr. S. Nothing like pickin', polishin', and chowin' down on fruit fresh off the tree.
Lobsters, clams, apples, geesh - sounds great pardner. How wonderful!
I remember picking fresh apricots off the trees on the way home from high school and then picking pears from orchards while on weekend fishing trips.
I need to fix some clam linguine soon....
    Take care

  5. I'm planning on making some Clam Chowder this evening... overnight lows in the lower 40's. Your Clam Linguine sure sounds great too.

I don't know what is happening with Facebook... my comments don't seem to show up - guess it must be cockpit error. In any case, your pictures and accounts of your trip are phenominal!
